Lanzhou children's welfare institute

Lanzhou Children¡¯s Welfare Institute was first built in 1950, located on No. 33 Qilihe, Baliyao. It is mainly responsible for taking care of the city¡¯s homeless and abandoned children and infants who lack social and financial support. In 1987, with the help from UNICEF, and with Provincial Civil Affairs Bureau¡¯s approval, established ¡°Lanzhou Disability Children Rehab Center¡±.

Lanzhou disability children rehab center and Lanzhou Children¡¯s Welfare Institute are sister institutions under the same administrative structure. It has a total area of 7800 square meters, with actual construction area of 6347 square meters. The institution has 100 beds and with 40 beds for medical and recovery. There are 263 orphans and children with disabilities and deformities with a staff of 94. Its main duties are medical and rehab, education and training and infant and toddlers care.

Lately, Lanzhou Children¡¯s Welfare Institute focuses on basic facility construction, working hard to improve raising, curing and teaching children¡¯s standards. For basic construction of facilities, we have drilled wells, renovated a children¡¯s recreational center, established multi media classroom and library and reading center, beautified institute¡¯s image; for different medical and rehab facilities, supplied with x-ray machines, ECG machines, B-ultrasonic machines, and other rehabilitation training equipments etc. On education, we have practiced young learner¡¯s education, advanced teaching, and special education, and categorized in training suitable to different children¡¯s needs. For care, the institute implemented programs, according to age range, health conditions, categorizing into different areas, and different rooms to nurse, scientific feed and improving quality standards adhering to mainstreaming foster care. Current daily living expense for each child is 250 RMB per month. In 2004, the institute established new programs to help children to return to families, and to reintegrate into the community. There have already been more than 50 children received foster care, and we are in the process of implementing ¡°Tomorrow Plan¡±, allowing 26 children to receive surgeries to their way to recovery. In the past two years, under the support from municipal council, we will remodel and renovate a new children¡¯s welfare institute, which will greatly improve children¡¯s living conditions.

Lanzhou Children¡¯s Welfare Institute was award National ¡°3 Programs Rehab Advanced Unit¡±, Gansu province ¡°First Class Welfare Institute¡±,¡°Province Wide Civil Affairs System Professionalism Construction Primary External Unit¡±, ¡°Lanzhou¡¯s Legislative System Advanced Organization¡±, ¡°Municipal Landscaping Unit¡±, ¡°Municipal Modernized Unit¡±, ¡°City¡¯s Handicapped and Disabled Labour Advanced Unit¡±, ¡°City¡¯s Civil Affairs System Advanced Unit¡± and other honorable titles.
