Nanjing Children's Social Welfare Institute was established in 1951. It consists of over 20 000 square meters, and actual area of usage is 18 000 square meter. There is currently 280 staff. After more than 50 years of growth and progress, it has developed into a comprehensive institution with 8 functions of child care, education, medical, rehab, foster care, adoption, research and training all within one institution.

Since the establishment of our institute, we emphasize on providing orphans and disabled children with the best service, adhering to our mission of “child care as fundamental, medical for safeguard, rehab as characteristic, special education as supplementary, placement as goal”. We strive to improve adopted children's “adaptability, environmental standards, self-esteem, and self-value”. In 2003, the institute passed ISO9001: 2000 Quality Management Standard International Authentication, allowing management and child care work to become more systematic and advanced. In 2004, our institute's Children Rehab Center for Disabled Children was appointed as the designated hospital for surgery and rehabilitation under the “Tomorrow's Plan”.

For many years, different levels of government official and community constantly supported the construction and development of our institute, greatly improving adopted children’s living and learning environment, medical and rehabilitation quality, allowing our unit to strengthen over the years. In 1953, Jiangsu province named our institute as “First Class Provincial Welfare Institution”. In 1994, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the state awarded the title “2nd Class National Social Welfare Institution”. In 1997, the Ministry of Civil Affairs awarded the title “Civil Service Model Unit under National Civil Affairs System”. Since establishment, it has been recognized by provincial and municipal government as “Progressive and Modernized Unit” every year.
